Tales from the River

Auto Date Friday, August 14th, 2009

Earlier this month, we got to enjoy one of my favorite company benefits, our quarterly company outing.  We like to get out of the office one day each quarter to do something fun and different.  It gives us a great chance to get to know each other a bit better, and build more team spirit.  Our destination of choice this quarter was white water tubing on the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, where we floated (and flipped!) down stream.  With the help of the folks at River Riders, in Harpers Ferry, WV, we got a quick safety lesson and were given free reign of the waters.

The weather was gorgeous, as was the scenery.  I think we all enjoyed the break from the office to get out and try a new adventure.  And by the next day, we all realized it was a good workout too!

The Fred Federal Show

Auto Date Monday, October 6th, 2008

Tired of the same hum-drum boring web content? Fred Federal is here to save the day!

Our friends at Cisco and Federal News Radio have recently released a new web-based radio style drama: The Fred Federal Show. This Cisco-sponsored program features Fred Federal, a fictitious government employee (who also happens to be a cyber-hero) solving problems big and small using technology.

Today I listened to the first episode and am now anxiously waiting for the second, which will be released in about two weeks. The Fred Federal Show is a quirky combination of radio drama and soap opera, and stories that will feature situations ripped from the headlines and solutions using the most modern technological advances.

Users who enjoy Fred’s adventures can even interact with the character through his
Facebook ® and MySpace © pages. Also featured on the page are links to real-life technologies that can be used by anyone to overcome everyday crises.

Lessons from the World’s Most Northerly Focus Group (…or, the Downside of Breaking the Ice)

Auto Date Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Arctic ModeratorEmbarking on one of our more adventurous vacations, in June my wife and I decided (that is, I decided and then begged relentlessly until she agreed) to fly to the Canadian Arctic and camp on an ice floe. My reason for going was simple: alarmed by all the news about global warming, I wanted to experience the land, culture and wildlife before it all melts away. It was a five night trip, although 24 hours of sunshine rendered “night” a meaningless term. There were nine of us in total, a small but very lively group from England, Scotland, Japan, Germany, America and, to headline news in his own country, the first Guatemalan ever to travel so far north.
